What is an endoscopy?

Endoscopy allows us to examine the internal structures of your dog or cat without the need for open surgery. Using a small, flexible camera, our team can investigate the gastrointestinal tract, airways, nasal passages, and urinary system in detail — identifying inflammation, abnormal tissue, foreign bodies, and other conditions that wouldn't be visible through external examination alone. Biopsies can be taken at the same time, giving us tissue samples for analysis without an additional procedure.

It's a minimally invasive approach that means less discomfort, faster recovery, and quicker answers for your pet. Endoscopy is often the first step in understanding a complex or unexplained condition — and in some cases, it's both the diagnostic tool and the treatment, allowing us to retrieve foreign objects or address certain issues in a single visit. If your vet has recommended endoscopy or you're waiting on answers for a long-standing digestive or respiratory issue, we're here to help.

What is an endoscopy?

An endoscope is a long, thin and flexible instrument used to perform veterinary endoscopy procedures. The endoscopic procedure is an investigative procedure to view internal structures and diagnose illness. At the end of the tube are a light and a camera so that we can record and take still images of the internal structures for medical reference and your interest. These images are viewed throughout the procedure then saved to your record. Endoscopy is less invasive than surgery and therefore highly recommended.

What can diagnostic endoscopy procedures be used for?

As well as diagnosing illness and disease, diagnostic endoscopy is used to show foreign bodies, tumours and internal structures so that we can differentiate whether the structures are normal or abnormal. More sophisticated veterinarian endoscopes have fibreoptic fibres which conduct the light to the far end, which gives much better illumination. Some endoscopes also have a biopsy facility, where small samples of the skin are removed using forceps to send to external pathology services for further investigation.

Is the use of an endoscope an option for my pet?

Our veterinary surgeons will determine whether or not an endoscopy is an option for your pet, however, some of the following symptoms are suitable for endoscopy.

Difficulty swallowing

Chest pain

Persistent nausea and vomiting

Unexplained weight loss

Vomiting blood

Persistent diarrhoea

Blood in stools

Foreign bodies

Tumours

Once our veterinary surgeon has established a minimally invasive and non surgical endoscopy as an option, we will select the best scope for your pet. This might be one of our rigid endoscopes, or a flexible endoscope. We offer endoscopy to both our regular clients and as an outpatient service.

Your questions, answered

Quick answers for vets and pet owners about referrals, services, and what to expect.

Do you accept pet insurance?

Yes. Most of our procedures are covered by pet insurance policies. We provide a detailed, itemised invoice for every case, which makes the claims process straightforward. We can also assist with pre-authorisation requests. Please bring your insurance details to your appointment, or contact us in advance if you need guidance.

How does your fixed-price guarantee work?

We provide a full, itemised written estimate before any procedure begins. The price in that estimate is the price you pay, it doesn’t change once approved. We’re one of the only referral centres in the UK to operate this way, and we’ve done so since 2008. No hidden fees, no end-of-treatment surprises.

Does my pet need a referral from their vet?

No. While the majority of our cases come via veterinary referral, we welcome self-referring pet owners directly. You can book a consultation through our website. If you’re self-referring, it’s helpful to bring any recent vet notes or clinical history with you.

How do I refer my patient to Northwest Referrals?

Complete our online referral form which takes under 5 minutes. You can also refer via our dedicated WhatsApp service by scanning the QR code on our contact page. Our team will review your submission and confirm the appointment, typically within a few hours. For urgent cases, call us directly on 01942 242001.
