CT (Computed Tomography)

CT, or Computed Tomography, is an invaluable diagnostic tool in the veterinary field.

It is used to investigate a wide range of symptoms and conditions due to its speed, accuracy, and ability to provide detailed imaging.
We are able to perform up to 10 CT scans per day, allowing us to maintain availability for emergency cases and prioritise appointments when urgent care is required.

All scans are reviewed and reported by veterinary specialists in imaging, neurology, orthopaedics, and general surgery, ensuring every patient benefits from outstanding assessment.

With this approach, you can be confident in receiving a fast, accurate diagnosis to support the best possible treatment plan for your pet.

Conditions and procedures

Lameness

Lameness can be a sign of a wide range of underlying issues, from joint problems and ligament injuries to fractures or more complex orthopaedic conditions. While some causes may be minor, persistent or unexplained lameness should always be investigated to ensure your pet receives the right treatment as quickly as possible. CT scanning provides highly detailed images of bones, joints, and surrounding structures, allowing us to accurately diagnose the cause of your pet’s discomfort and create the most effective treatment plan.

Common Causes of Lameness in Dogs and Cats

Arthritis / Osteoarthritis

Cruciate Ligament Injury / Rupture

Fractures and Bone Trauma

Soft Tissue Sprains and Strains

Luxations / Dislocations

Hip or Elbow Dysplasia

Patellar Luxation

Tendon and Ligament Injuries

Bone or Joint Infection (Septic Arthritis / Osteomyelitis)

Intervertebral Disc Disease / Spinal Conditions

Nerve Damage / Neurological Disease

Bone Tumours / Cancer

Growth Plate Injuries / Developmental Orthopaedic Disease

Foreign Bodies / Foot or Paw Injuries

Degenerative joint disease/arthritis, cruciate ligament disease, trauma/fractures, infections, and neoplastic (tumour) causes are all recognized contributors to limping/lameness in small animals.

Oncology and Lumps

Finding a lump or bump on your pet can be worrying, but early investigation is key to ensuring the best possible outcome. While many lumps may be harmless, others can represent more serious conditions and should always be assessed by a veterinary professional, as appearance alone cannot reliably determine whether a mass is benign or malignant. CT scanning is an extremely valuable tool in oncology, helping us assess the size, location, and extent of masses, as well as determine whether there has been any spread to other areas of the body as part of cancer staging. With detailed imaging, CT allows us to plan the most appropriate treatment for your pet and move forward with confidence in their care.

Common Causes of Lumps and Bumps in Dogs and Cats

Lipomas (fatty lumps)

Sebaceous Cysts

Abscesses / Infections

Warts / Papillomas

Mast Cell Tumours

Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Histiocytomas

Skin Tags / Benign Skin Growths

Enlarged Lymph Nodes

Mammary Tumours

Bone Tumours

Bone TumoInternal Masses / Organ Tumoursurs

CT is especially valuable for detecting bone-related changes, trauma, and space-occupying lesions, and can provide rapid, detailed information to guide urgent neurological decision-making.

Neurology and CT in Pets

Neurological conditions can be complex and sometimes require advanced imaging to reach a diagnosis. While MRI is considered the gold standard for evaluating many neurological disorders, CT still plays a valuable and important role in the investigation of these cases. It is particularly useful for identifying changes involving the skull, spine, and bones, as well as detecting conditions such as trauma, bleeding, or structural abnormalities. Symptoms such as seizures, unexplained pain, weakness, or changes in behaviour may all indicate an underlying neurological issue, and CT can provide rapid, detailed imaging to help guide the next steps in diagnosis and treatment. This allows us to act quickly and ensure your pet receives the most appropriate care as soon as possible.

Common Causes of Lumps and Bumps in Dogs and Cats

CT scanning is particularly useful for evaluating the skull, brain, and spinal structures, and can help diagnose or identify features of the following conditions:

Lipomas (fatty lumps)

Skull fractures and head trauma

Brain haemorrhage (bleeding)

Brain masses / tumours (e.g. meningioma)

Hydrocephalus (“water on the brain”)

Middle and inner ear disease (otitis media/interna)

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Vertebral fractures or spinal trauma

Spinal cord compression

Degenerative spinal conditions

Lumbosacral disease / cauda equina syndrome

Atlantoaxial instability

Congenital malformations of the brain or spine

Sinus or skull-based disease affecting neurological function

Lipomas, cysts, abscesses, mast cell tumours, papillomas, and other skin/soft tissue tumours are all recognised causes of palpable masses in pets.

Your questions, answered

Quick answers for vets and pet owners about referrals, services, and what to expect.

Do you accept pet insurance?

Yes. Most of our procedures are covered by pet insurance policies. We provide a detailed, itemised invoice for every case, which makes the claims process straightforward. We can also assist with pre-authorisation requests. Please bring your insurance details to your appointment, or contact us in advance if you need guidance.

How does your fixed-price guarantee work?

We provide a full, itemised written estimate before any procedure begins. The price in that estimate is the price you pay, it doesn’t change once approved. We’re one of the only referral centres in the UK to operate this way, and we’ve done so since 2008. No hidden fees, no end-of-treatment surprises.

Does my pet need a referral from their vet?

No. While the majority of our cases come via veterinary referral, we welcome self-referring pet owners directly. You can book a consultation through our website. If you’re self-referring, it’s helpful to bring any recent vet notes or clinical history with you.

How do I refer my patient to Northwest Referrals?

Complete our online referral form which takes under 5 minutes. You can also refer via our dedicated WhatsApp service by scanning the QR code on our contact page. Our team will review your submission and confirm the appointment, typically within a few hours. For urgent cases, call us directly on 01942 242001.
