Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery

Our orthopedic veterinary surgeons treat congenital and acquired injuries of bones, joints and the spine utilizing the newest bone plating, pinning and fixation devices and methodologies.

Orthopedic trauma is managed by procedures designed to stabilize fractures, treat soft tissue injuries and promote rapid recovery. A variety of techniques are employed where possible to promote rapid diagnosis and repair. These techniques include: plating and fracture stabilization and arthroscopic evaluation and treatment of joint (shoulder, elbow, and knee) problems.

  • Fracture stabilization of the joint (shoulder, elbow and knee)
  • Arthroscopy
  • Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) and Total Hip Replacement
  • Patella Luxation or disclocated kneecap(MPL/LPL)
  • Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Musculotendinous injuries (strains, sprains or trauma to soft tissue)

Soft Tissue Surgery

Surgeons performing soft tissue procedures diagnose and treat certain diseases that involve the chest, abdomen, skin and other soft tissues. The teamwork approach is to assure that your pet receives the best possible options for an optimal outcome.

Additionally, minimally invasive procedures are performed whenever possible to promote healing while minimizing patient discomfort. Such techniques include biopsies as well as reparative procedures for certain diseases that involve the chest or abdomen.

Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Northwest Referrals team of Veterinary surgeons treat many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. Some of the surgical procedures performed include:

  • Jaw fracture repair
  • Surgical extractions
  • Restorations
  • Treatment of periodontal disease
  • Oral cancer surgery

Vet Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology

Northwest Referrals utilises the advanced imaging modalities of radiography (x-ray), ultrasound, in-house computed tomography (CT), and in-house magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis, prognosis, and surgical treatment planning in companion animals.

Minimally Invasive Veterinary Surgeries

These procedures are performed through tiny incisions instead of one large opening. Because the incisions are small, patients tend to have quicker recovery times and less discomfort than with conventional surgery — all with the same benefits. These techniques include:

  • Arthroscopy: a surgical procedure used to visualize, diagnose, and treat joint disease
  • Stent placement for collapsed trachea: treatment for a common cause of cough in dogs due to decreased strength within the cartilage of the airway or “windpipe”

Neurosurgery

Surgical diseases of the nervous system are also treated at our practice. Neurosurgery is routinely performed for spinal disease and conditions that cause back pain, paralysis or lameness, including diseases of the disc and spine. This specialty surgery is also performed to treat abnormal brain conditions and has been successful in removing certain tumors.
