Ron 3 year old male pomeranian canine was referred to the Northwest Referrals with a history of a trauma and severe lameness of the left front limb. X-rays of the left forearm were taken and fracture of the distal radius and ulna was noted ( fig 1.1; 1.2). Decision of the fracture repair using a compression plate was used and fracture was stabilised (fig 1.3; 1.4). Dressing was applied post op and dog did an uneventful recovery.

Symptoms to look out for

  • difficulty rising from a sit
  • trouble jumping into the car
  • decreased activity level
  • lameness (limping) of variable severity
  • muscle atrophy (decreased muscle mass in the affected leg)
  • decreased range of motion of the knee joint
  • a popping noise (which may indicate a meniscal tear)
  • swelling on the inside of the shin bone (fibrosis or scar tissue)
  • pain
  • unwillingness to play
  • stiffness
